Beth’s “Totems” are visual messengers telling a story of form, color and surface. The clay surfaces are a combination of glazed and unglazed pieces. The final smoke-firing process creates unpredictable and mysterious surfaces. Time and weather influence the patina of the rich red earthenware clay, continuing the story to be told.
“They change by their environment and each other. They are fragile to view, yet have strength. Their mystery and attraction elevate them to a higher status, both in reality and metaphor.”
“I enjoy making these, handling the clay with spontaneity, and defining the groupings and relationships they create.”
