Online Exhibit: Limits of Spontaneity

BOJUart gallery is pleased to announce the addition to our online exhibitions Limits of Spontaneity. Opening 6PM, May 7 – June 4, 2020.

Since our inception all of our artists’ work has been posted in our online store. Moving forward, we’re curating new online programs highlighting visiting and BOJUart multidisciplinary artists while striving to create a “gallery” experience to engage the viewer.

Limits of Spontaneity is a solo exhibition featuring the large abstract work of BOJUart mixed media artist Marlowe Emerson. Emerson’s explores the limits of spontaneity in painting and drawing, playing with a tension between simplicity and complexity. She has an emotional relationship with color and the immediacy of scribbling, mark making, and other expressionist techniques. The collage elements are obtained through drawing or photography, then sometimes digitally altered. Working with a range of media, including acrylic paints, various qualities of paper, and different types of pastels and pencils achieves a complex, textured finish.

Emerson lives and works out of her studio in Virginia Beach. Her work has been shown in museums and galleries along the East Coast. She currently teaches abstract painting at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). The primary focus of her instruction is the intuitive process of painting and the value of abstract expressionism as a meditative practice. BOJUart donates a portion of each piece sold to her cause, the Virginia MOCA Art Education Programs.

Shown: outtake of But I Love You, 2019
