Mixed Media, Abstracts

At one time I owned a small business making and repairing stained glass windows, which led to studying glass at the Cleveland Institute of Art. I love glass as a medium, but my art moved on and evolved to primarily painting in a fairly traditional manor using oil on canvas. My recent abstract works feel like a continuation of my glass art. They are more experimental and incorporate non-traditional materials (spray paint, epoxy resin, ink, etc.). I explore color, pattern, and optics in these works. The majority of these are created by layering up to seven layers of clear, glass-like, acrylic resin. As the layers build the colors intensify, designs are magnified, and elements in upper layers cast shadows onto layers below, creating both optical and physical depth. The edges are left clear and unframed allowing light to enter from the sides as well as the front. They exist in the space between 2D and 3D. The process is slow (paint, mix and pour, cure, sand, and repeat) but the results are glossy, bold and bright.

BOJUart donates a portion of each piece sold to this artist’s cause the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T.) to emphasize the need to preserve and protect the habitats and migration routes of Sea Turtle and other marine animals on the Outer Banks of North Carolina from the Virginia border to Oregon Inlet.
