Smartmouth Pilot House Celebrates Shaylen Amanda Broughton’s Mural

BOJUart gallery is pleased to announce BOJUartist Shaylen Amanda Broughton’s recent 15  x 60 foot indoor mural at the Smartmouth Pilot House, Virginia Beach. Smartmouth will be hosting a mural celebration from 6PM to 9PM on June 13, 2019. The celebratory event will include a pop-up exhibition by BOJUart gallery of the internationally recognized artist’s fluid paintings. A Taste of Texas will be the food truck hanging out that evening.

Inspired by her fluid painting process, Broughton’s abstract design was loosely planned, and brought to life with several layers of blended brush work, followed by detail lines to create the cell like pattern that appears in her canvas work. Though the process is different, the goal is to capture a similar feeling. Smartmouth had envisioned something that had that ocean vibe, but was not literal, which aligned perfectly with Broughton’s work. Smartmouth Co-Owner Kim Hardy says, “Smartmouth is thrilled with the mural that Shay created for us. It transformed our space, enlivening it with color, creativity and warmth.”

BOJUart routinely donates a portion of each piece of artwork sold to a cause of that artist’s choice. Virginia Beach has asked the United Way to be their partner on creating a fund for the victims. The victims affected by this tragedy will receive 100% of the funds raised. For the month of June, rather than donating to multiple causes, BOJUart and our artists will be donating to one cause – the Virginia Beach United Way Tragedy Fund.

Shaylen Amanda Broughton
Broughton was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia which is also where she currently works and resides. She obtained her Bachelor of Fine Art from The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2011. Her artistic ambition, however, began long before college and is also her current livelihood; pulsating in the plethora of artwork on canvas. She has exhibited in group and solo shows in the US, as well as in the UK and Australia. Broughton is also a solo and duo muralist with projects in Richmond and most recently for Something in the Water and Smartmouth Pilot House in Virginia Beach, VA. In addition to exhibiting her work, Broughton works with several nonprofits in Richmond VA, leading community art projects such as large-scale interior murals and after-school art programs.

Smartmouth Brewing, Pilot House
Founded in 2012 with locations in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Smartmouth Brewing Company makes beer, thinks beer, talks beer and drinks beer. Located in a former post office near 32nd and Pacific, just three blocks from the Virginia Beach oceanfront, the fully-renovated Pilot House is home to a small-batch brewing system, private event space and tasting room. It’s the ideal pre-beach, post-beach and instead-of-the-beach spot for those looking to enjoy a fresh pint.
